Misrepresented in print and social media
League of Women Voters of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Area is writing to express concern because its Nov. 23 letter to the Lake Forest Caucus regarding their annual meeting proceedings has been misrepresented in both print and social media.
An article in The Lake Forester newspaper on Thursday, Dec. 8, contained the headline, “League objects to Lake Forest committee endorsement.” This headline is misleading because LWV-LF/LB did not object to the endorsement itself. We objected to the caucus committee disregarding the majority vote of their general membership, who did not support the committee’s recommendation for mayoral candidate.
Then, in a recent episode of “Lake Forest Podcast,” it was erroneously stated that LWV was supporting one candidate for mayor, and it was implied that this would be a problem when it came time for the candidate forums. The hosts were discussing the mayoral election as summarized in local e-newspaper The Patch, when host Pete said, “And then, the League of Women Voters, they put a few quotes in there for Prue.” Host Skoo replied, “That’s going to be interesting because they’re really the only ones who have a mayoral debate. So how are they going to keep that?” LWV-LF/LB did NOT provide any quotes in support or opposition to any candidates.
Despite the implication of the Lake Forester headline and the erroneous statement issued within the podcast, LWV-LF/LB does not endorse or oppose candidates. Our mission remains to educate and empower all voters, and to defend democracy. In this spirit, we look forward to inviting all the mayoral candidates to participate in a candidate forum. As always, local forums are moderated by professionals outside of our community to ensure impartiality.
